Another year, another TCM Film Fest! Unfortunately, once again Craig's work schedule only permitted us to attend the last day, and once again we were not passholders. The good news is that if you get there early enough, you can hop in the standby line and get in without too much trouble, which is how Craig and I found ourselves outside the Egyptian at 8:30 in the morning. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be at 8:30 in the morning, really.
While waiting in the line, they asked us trivia questions. Last year we won a box set and a TCM classic film trivia book. This year? Psh.
But we had fun talking movies with the other people in line, and eagerly anticipating the first film of our day: Gilda! Once in the theatre, I took an unhealthy number of pictures of the screen...I really like this year's graphic mashups of different film genres. I would love the femme fatale/gunslinger one as a poster!
Have you ever looked at the ceiling in the Egyptian Theatre? It's truly a thing to behold. I absolutely love it. Seeing Gilda in this glorious theatre was a great way to start the day. Debra Winger introduced the film, and we sat watching 110 minutes of shadows and light, and Rita Hayworth va-va-vooming across the screen.
Lunch break! If you're in the area, I highly recommend Miceli's on Las Palmas. It's a really quaint Italian restaurant with a lounge pianist and a great cozy atmosphere. Perfect for recharging for another film!
We got our numbers for the second film, Libeled Lady, read the programming guide, and felt sad about all the screenings we had missed the previous days. But no matter! We were excited to see Libeled Lady on the big screen...it's one of my favorite comedies!
And whaddya know? One of Craig's favorite filmmakers Allison Anders was sitting a mere two seats away from us! She had never seen the film, and I was a wee bit jealous that her introduction to this screwball masterpiece was on the silver screen!
Despite only seeing two films, it was a real treat to be in the area and see all the fans. There's a magic in seeing films on the big screen that just can't be duplicated at home. And what a treat to live close enough to LA that we can attend festivals like this! The TCM classic film festival is a treat for those who hold the classics close to their hearts. Until next year...!
