A House Divided...

It's Oscar time! Craig here with my annual musings on this rather wacky and all over the place field of nominations. LOT of surprises this year. Some good, some not so good. Really bummed to see Moonrise Kingdom virtually shut out and The Master shut out of non-acting stuff. Perhaps these will fare better in our upcoming poll? With the lack of a real clear front-runner and the odd differences between the Guild nominees and these nominees, I don't think I'm going to do too well when it comes time to lay money on the line on Oscar night. Oh well! Onward with my ramblings!

*      *      *

-Wow no Moonrise Kingdom or The Master in Best Picture? Guess Harvey Weinstein threw all his weight behind Silver Linings Playbook rather than The Master and of course only one "quirky" film can get nominated at a time, right?

-That sound you hear? Quentin Tarantino’s ego coming to destroy us all!

-I need to see Amour.

-Glad Joaqin got a nom despite his disinterest, but really…it’s another Day-Lewis year right?

-The Impossible? Naomi Watts winning against ANY of these other performances, THAT is impossible.  The extremely old v the extremely young alongside two great performances. Maybe all the amazing will cancel out and she will win. I hope not...

-Supporting actor and actress are really solid categories. Didn’t expect to hear Jacki Weaver’s name but she was good too.

-Oh yeah that Pirates! animated movie came out this year. Maybe I should see that…

-Sure an average Roger Deakins film is better than an amazing film from most other DPs, but I’d much rather see him finally win for a Coen Brothers film…

-How can The Master possibly get snubbed for photography? 70mm bitches!

-Battle of the Snow Whites!

-Perhaps the most random assortment of directors EVER. I have no clue who the front-runner in this field is. Rather different from the DGA noms.

-Oh you're the first ever woman to win a directing Oscar AND you directed one of this year's best movies? NO NOMINATION FOR YOU! Feels like the whisper-campaign that the film was pro-torture worked. Is that you again Harvey Weinstein?

-In the words of Mango: Ben Who-Fleck?

-How To Survive a Plague! (review coming soon)

-Still need to see Searching for Sugar Man

-No love for the universally praised The Intouchables? Francophilia is dead!?

-2nd time in 3 years where the host is nominated. Hopefully this will be a better ceremony than that debacle…

-Adele is totally winning right?

-No Johnny Greenwood score :-(

-Short films? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

-The Comic-Con crowd must be really conflicted on Visual Effects!

-Wow the writing crop is also substantially different from the Guild noms. No Master, no Perks no Looper? At least Moonrise finally got some love!
