Sight & Sound Challenge: A Day in the Country (1936)

Film: A Day in the Country (Partie de campagne) (73/250)
Critics Poll: 90th
Directors Poll: 322nd
First Time/Rewatch: First Time

What a lovely film, and yet another example of an expertly crafted short film. In just 40 minutes, director Jean Renoir gives us a look at an afternoon in the lives of a few characters, an afternoon spent enjoying nature and succumbing to passion. Renoir hasn't let me down yet. I've also seen his films The River (1951) and The Rules of the Game (1939) and enjoyed both immensely. He has a tenderness for his characters and they have an authenticity that's irresistible. I highly recommend this film, if only for a short break from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives.
