John Wick (2014)

On the list of things you're not supposed to do in a film, "killing a dog" comes pretty close to the top. People love animals, especially adorable ones with personality. Seeing an animal harmed can bring out facets of someone's personality that they never even knew they had. This is precisely why John Wick almost literally begins with the murder of an adorable beagle named Daisy.

Even if you don't have a dog yourself, you are instantly on board with John Wick's mission. You want to kill the "bad guys" just as badly as he does. And despite what other vengeance films might tell you, revenge can in fact be a straight line. There is no need for copious exposition, reversals and a 2+ hour runtime. Even the action scenes are filmed in the most economical and clear manner possible. Not even a post-credits tag. This is about as straight forward as a story can get and we love it for that.
