SIght & Sound Challenge: Floating Clouds (1955)

Film: Floating Clouds (161/250)
First Time/Rewatch: First Time

Some stories are told again and again; in this case, a story of doomed love. It's a timeless premise, one that can be told an infinite number of ways. This film is about a married man and a woman who have an affair and cling to those memories for better or worse. Hearts are broken, hearts are hardened, hearts are healed, over and over again. I really liked the lead actress Hideko Takamine who played Yukiko...she had this tough Gloria Grahame thing going on when she was trying to hide her hurt and pain. Her face really helped differentiate between the past and present in the story...her "in love" face was so different from her hardened bitter face it was almost like they had two actresses. The only complaint I have is that the film really lost steam in the second half, but that's a minor complaint. It's an impeccably made and well acted story that I would have missed entirely if not for this challenge. Some stories are worth telling over and over.
