The Witch (2016)

Why do bad things happen to good people? There has to be a reason for evil befalling those who have done nothing wrong, right? Perhaps they aren't as good as they think they are? Or maybe someone sold them out! There must be someone to blame. As the film sets up rather early on, there very much is something sinister residing in the woods, but did someone in the family actually consort with the devil and bring this upon them? Did the twins wish to dispatch their new brother for stealing their spotlight? Did the father compromise his piety in hopes of making their exile successful? Perhaps brother Caleb's young lust was so overpowering that he was willing to sacrifice anything? As an audience member, you find yourself pointing fingers that no one in the film is pointing. Someone must be to blame. It couldn't possibly be that this was a desperate family who only needed a small push to descend into anarchy, right? Questions like this, combined with some truly disturbing imagery, will leave The Witch lodged in your brain for long after the credits have rolled.

  1. The primal human experience before knowing the world and technology, this movie really delves into our most base psyche. I really enjoyed this one!
