Greenberg (2010)

Thank God Noah Baumbach met Greta Gerwig. The misanthropy of Margot at the Wedding was almost too much to bear. Watching it I feared that Baumbach was already too far gone. I worried that it would become the blueprint for the rest of his career. And then he met Greta. Seeing as he was still with Jennifer Jason Leigh at the time, I know that there is no way Noah could have foresaw what Gerwig would mean for his future, but it's impossible to ignore the fact that in Greenberg she is playing the character who prompts a misanthrope to lighten up a little. And all his films since have been this perfect balance of cynicism and optimism. It's one hell of a streak. And it's all thanks to the ineffable charm of Greta Gerwig.
