Scrooged (1988)

Scrooged works because it is both funny and spooky. Like the original Ghostbusters, this film actually has the ability to scare. And the reason it is able to do that is because money was actually spent on it. The filmmakers didn't just settle for generic creatures and effects. You can tell that time and effort went into actually designing the look of this film. Models were actually built and the makeup is top notch! When did we stop spending money on comedies? I guess that's what draws studios to them: they cost little and earn lots. But when the movie looks cheap, it can kind of undermines the jokes. Imagine how awful this could have been with bright lighting and paint by numbers creatures! Well at least they got it right here, right?
