Sight & Sound Challenge: A Trip to the Moon (1902)

Film: A Trip to the Moon (54/250)
Critics Poll: 171st
Directors Poll: 546th
First Time/Rewatch: Rewatch

This short film is basically Cinema 101. To understand and appreciate film now, you must understand and appreciate its origins. And what magical origins they are! There were no rules in 1902, no pre-conceived notions about what movies had to be. It was all experimentation and magic. The short films of Georges Melies are simply that: magic. The costumes, the fantastic settings, the dream-like scenarios, all together they make the most delightful cinematic experiences. I highly recommend seeing as many Melies films as you can if you at all consider yourself a movie buff. It's the very best kind of homework, so study up!
