Sight & Sound Challenge: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Film: 2001: A Space Odyssey (40/250)
Critics Poll: 6th
Directors Poll: 2nd
First Time/Rewatch: Rewatch

What hasn't been said about this film? I've seen it many times, revered in our house growing up as one of my dad's favorite movies. It's a film of mysteries, of mind-blowing visuals, of questions of good and evil, and concepts I can't even begin to wrap my head around. This time we got to see it at the Hollywood Bowl with a live orchestra (a true cinephile's delight!). And there it all was. The monolith. The Star Gate sequence. The apes. HAL's red eye. The music. The silence. It's breathtaking to behold. It's witnessing Kubrick's genius at its peak. 2001 is one of those films that you really want to dive into, to find out about the source material, find out how it was made, what could have been, what was added, what was cut, what other people have to say about it. And even after all that, you STILL feel like you need more. You still feel like that stunned and shaking astronaut. No explanation is ever enough.
