Coal Mine Canary

Since he burst onto the film scene in 1986, Spike Lee has never gone more than a year between theatrical features. Yet here we stand 3 years after Miracle At St. Anna, with no new Spike Lee Joint even in pre-production. Spike being Spike has rightfully chosen not to take this lying down and spoke out on this sad fact.  Combine this with the fact that Woody Allen is having to make movies in Europe because New York is too expensive, and you really realize that something is rotten in Denmark (or rather) Hollywood.

Studios have become INSANELY gun-shy. 2011 is presently setting a record for the most sequels, remakes and adaptations EVER. This isn't to say that all sequels, prequels, remakes, etc are awful. Some are damn good. But what about small films? What about original films? Just as man cannot live on bread alone, man can also not live on blockbusters alone.

It's getting to the point where if you want to shoot an original film with anything fancier than your iPhone, you need to find yourself a billionaire heiress. It's hard out here for a pimp. Especially if that pimp is an artiste.
